Account-Based Marketing: What Is ABM?
May 10, 2021In today's digital age, where information abounds and communication channels are multiplying, marketers are finding it increasingly difficult to capture the attention of their (potential) customers.
In the specific case of the B2B market, for companies to achieve a higher return on investment (ROI) from their marketing efforts, they need to focus primarily on high-value accounts.
It is in this context that account-based marketing has emerged. The concept of account-based marketing is not entirely new, but it has gained greater prominence in recent years due to technological advancements and the ever-changing environment driving the business world.

What is Account-Based Marketing (ABM)?
Account-Based Marketing (ABM) is a growth strategy for organizations that relies on clear alignment between marketing and sales teams to create highly personalized buying experiences for a specific set of high-value accounts.
It is a marketing approach used in the B2B sector that aims to engage potential customers previously identified as “a good fit” (so-called target accounts) and convert them into actual customers.
The ABM process involves communicating with each account (each potential customer, each organization) as if it were a single market. This requires running specific campaigns for each one, producing content that is segmented and tailored to each account, and personalizing all marketing and sales communications.

Is ABM a good strategy for your company?
If you’ve never heard of account-based marketing, you’re probably wondering whether or not this is the right strategy for your organization. So here’s a quick exercise that can help you figure that out: if you identify with any of the following five statements, it means that ABM could help your company improve the ROI of its marketing activities and contribute to the overall growth of your business.
• My target audience consists of a small number of companies: if your product or service is aimed at a market that typically consists of a small number of players, a more broad-based digital marketing strategy is unlikely to be effective. With ABM, you’ll communicate more directly with each organization you want to attract.
• There isn’t just one person with the authority to make a purchasing decision for my product and/or service: in the B2B sector, it’s common for there to be multiple stakeholders who influence the decision-making process for purchasing a product or service from a supplier. An ABM strategy involves creating resources and running campaigns tailored to the specific needs and concerns of each of the different stakeholders (known as “buying roles”).
• I have trouble clearly demonstrating ROI: if this is the case at your company, then ABM will certainly enable you to demonstrate results more clearly. Furthermore, a study by ITSMA has shown that ABM leads to a higher return on investment than any other B2B marketing strategy (Marketo).
• I’m spending too much time, money, and resources: unlike other tactics that may be causing you to spend resources without generating the expected results, ABM allows marketers to use resources more efficiently, as they are focused on specific, high-value accounts.
• I have low engagement with my audience: low levels of engagement with your audience can be addressed through account-based marketing, which, as a highly personalized and targeted strategy, tends to result in higher engagement.
• I’m unsure about the goals and metrics I should track: tracking the performance of your marketing efforts is essential for optimizing them and achieving increasingly better results. Since ABM focuses on a select group of target accounts, it becomes easier to analyze campaign performance and measure the results of each email, each ad, each page, and each piece of content.
• My company’s marketing and sales teams aren’t well aligned: alignment between marketing and sales (Smarketing) is crucial for the company to work toward a common goal. If this isn’t currently the case, ABM can help turn the situation around by emphasizing the importance of both departments in attracting potential customers and closing deals.
