6 Tips for Writing Content Your Target Audience Wants to Read

Developing a content strategy will inevitably involve some trial and error; however, there are a number of tactics you can use to avoid mistakes and reduce the number of attempts needed to achieve success.

Content marketinghas been growing steadily and is one of the most important tools in inbound marketing, but it’s of little use if it doesn’t reach anyone. For your content to help anyone—and especially to help your target audience—it must be relevant and answer the questions your potential customers have. How? No, you don’t need to read minds...

#1 Listen

If you want to know what your (potential) customers are thinking, you’ll have to talk less and listen more. Where is your target audience? Forums? Social media? Online groups? Seek them out and join the conversation; listen carefully to their questions and concerns, and build your content strategy around them.

Is your market still growing, and are there no spaces yet where people discuss interests and needs related to your field? Create one! Start a group on social media or a forum page on your website. This way, you’ll not only be fostering communication around your product or service but also positioning yourself as a leader in your field.

#2 Pay Attention to the Competition

Who are your direct competitors? Are they performing better online than your brand? Are they more successful at achieving their business goals? Conduct a detailed analysis of your direct competitors’ social media presence, observe their communication patterns, and analyze their best and worst results. Trial and error is an inherent part of communication, but there’s no harm in learning from the mistakes and successes of others as well.

Don’t forget that there’s no magic formula. Communication strategies that work for one brand may not work for another, so be sure to always stay true to your identity.

#3 Keywords

Remember, you’re not alone! Companies like Google offer a wealth of information on the most popular searches—you just have to listen to their suggestions. Use Google Trends, AdWords, and Keywords, or invest in other tools, such as MOZ. Don’t forget that keywords can be short-tail or long-tail, each with its own advantages. Make the most of both and watch your SEO deliver visible results.

#4 Stay Ahead of the Curve

There are certain milestones in your industry that generate questions, interest, and—as a result—searches! It might even be one of your competitors launching a new product with new features, and it’s inevitable that your target audience will seek out content on the topic. Stay on top of trends and events, prepare relevant content (posts, tutorials, FAQs, demos, etc.), and you’ll be one step ahead of all your competitors. It’s that simple.

The most effective content marketing is the kind that offers help. If you work in the software industry and are aware of potential bugs or a major user error related to a product or service, write about how to fix it! Even if it takes a few months, searches on the topic will eventually come up.

#5 Ask

People are always leaving comments on forums, posts, or even right under your nose—in your own posts. If it seems like your customers are reluctant to share reviews and opinions, you’ll need to take an active role and encourage the process with some kind of incentive or even a reward. Make sure you’re constantly monitoring the comments shared and trying to address the most reasonable requests.

A slightly more obvious and direct approach is to conduct surveys. If it makes sense for your product or service, conduct surveys or satisfaction calls, and organize focus groups to discuss new ideas and needs.

#6 Analytics

Look at the results! Which blog posts have had the most views and time on page? Which emails have had the best open and click-through rates? Which content gets the most clicks in your newsletter? Which page on your website has had the most views from organic traffic? Identify your best- and worst-performing content, and you’ll quickly spot patterns and trends in your audiences’ interests.
