More and more, companies are turning to data analytics not only to measure and validate results, but also to better understand the people they’re communicating with. Measuring the effectiveness of digital marketing is a key piece in the puzzle of business development and customer acquisition.

  1. Define Business Goals and Priorities—SMART.

It’s essential to define from the outset what you want to achieve by outlining goals and priorities. Use SMART goals to help determine objectives that can have a real impact.

What are S.M.A.R.T. goals?

Specific – Specific and precise goals that leave no room for doubt about what you intend to achieve;

Measurable – They must be defined in such a way that they can be measured and quantified;

Attainable – They must be agreed upon by all stakeholders and achievable.

Relevant – Goals must be relevant and realistic to be achievable given the available resources.

Time-Based – They must have reasonable deadlines for achieving the objective. Not too short—so as not to make the objectives unattainable or cause demotivation—nor too long, which could hinder the intensity of the work pace.

  1. Define your buyer personas and segments.

Defining buyer personas means gaining a better understanding of the people we intend to communicate with. It involves profiling our potential buyers—demographically, behaviorally, and psychologically—using relevant information so that we can tailor our communication.

Since there are different services and products for different people with different needs, different market segments can be defined. This requires creating buyer profiles based on these segments so that you can communicate more effectively with each one.

  1. Understand your customers’ buying process.

Understand the buying process of your buyer personas. Put yourself in the customer’s shoes and try to understand how they begin their search for a service or product, which communication channels they use, and what decision-making criteria they consider before making a purchase. Align your communication and content with the buying process so that it remains relevant and useful.

  1. Measure, Evaluate, Improve.

Define KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)—metrics that can help you track the business’s progress. These range from traffic metrics—to gauge website visitor volume, as well as traffic sources and channels that generate the most visitors—to conversion metrics. Which channels and content drive the most conversions?

If the results fall short of your goals, analyze the data to identify areas for improvement. If you meet your goals, there’s always room for improvement. It’s important to remember that you need to track the entire visitor journey—from initial engagement to becoming a customer—across the entire sales funnel to achieve better results.

  1. Invest in a robust technology platform.

Only through a robust technology platform can we collect data and gain reliable access to information that can be analyzed to inform actions and measures that will have the greatest impact on the business. The data collected helps us understand buyer behavior, providing more insight when adjusting our communication strategy.

Research and invest in platforms that can bring real benefits to your business. Consider different features, such as integration with other platforms and applications.

  1. Define the reports and information you need to monitor.

Define the reports and information you need to analyze in order to make decisions. Reports should align with business objectives and metrics so they can be analyzed periodically to track business progress and determine whether you’re on track to meet your goals. Based on these reports, you can adjust strategies and make important decisions that can immediately influence the direction of your business.
